Friday Digital Roundup

The Friday Digital Roundup is a witty take on the weird world of the internet. With fun stories from around the globe, it’s the only email newsletter you’ll actually read and enjoy!

We do love writing it, but clearly not as much as people like receiving it - just look at the response we got when a technical hitch meant it wasn’t sent out on time!

Coffee and the FDR is how I start my Friday.
Do not engage until I have devoured both

Meschi Consultants @MeschiConsult

When it comes to the end of the week, there is no better way to start a Friday than with a run around the internet with Todd and Jo in the FDR. Just don't let them know I do it from the loo!

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Being A Social Media Manager

Tue 24th Jun 2025
By Hannah

Being a social media manager might look like a cute gig from the outside – bit of Canva, a cheeky reel, maybe the odd #ThrowbackThursday. Easy, right? Yeah… no.

Beneath the glossy posts and bangin’ engagement rates is a wild west of constant updates, relentless multitasking, and more personality-switching than an actor with a tax bill. It’s not for the faint-hearted, the flaky, or the “can you just post this?” crew.

So here it is, folks. The real behind-the-scenes chaos. Welcome to…

1. The algorithm’s in charge – and it’s a total diva

We’d love to say we’re running the show, but honestly? We’re dancing for the algorithm. And it’s a changeable little gremlin.

One week it’s pushing “videos, videos, videos!” the next it’s giving all the love to still images “but make sure it’s a carousel post!” And don’t even get us started on Instagram hashtags (RIP btw.) 💀

If you’re not obsessed with what’s trending, testing every format under the sun, and tweaking your strategy like a mad scientist… you’re toast.

Social media managers don’t just keep up – we’re sprinting ahead, dodging updates, and somehow still smiling when Instagram changes its grid ratio (with no warning…) *screams into a pillow. 🫠

2. We wear more hats than a fancy dress shop

Wedding boutique? Got it. Cyber security? No worries. Trade business run by a bloke named Gary with ADHD and no content? We’ll make it work.

Social media managers are chameleons. One minute we’re channelling your bubbly best mate who loves prosecco, the next we’re writing like a seasoned pro who knows all about GDPR compliance and corporate tone of voice. We don’t just switch gears – we rewrite the flipping engine while it’s still running.

And don’t even get us started on the graphics, the analytics, the strategy, or the “can we just get this live by EOD?” requests. It’s content creation on steroids, but we bloody love it. 😉

3. We have more tabs open than a hacker

Let’s play a game: count how many apps, platforms, and tools we’ve got open right now. Spoiler alert – there’s no prize because we lost count somewhere between Canva, Planable, OneDrive, TikTok, Trello, and 97 Slack messages. (Well, it’s important to keep up with the team talking about dogs.)

Being a social media manager means juggling multiple brands, content calendars, community management, and real-time reactions to whatever chaos the internet serves up that day.

If we had a quid for every time we switched tabs in an hour, we’d be typing this from our private yacht.

4. We speak fluent emoji (and meme, and trend, and internet weirdness)

There’s a fine art to knowing when a 💅 adds flair and when it screams “your dad’s just discovered Instagram.” Emojis aren’t just cute – they’re a language. One we’ve mastered.

Same goes for meme culture, trending audio, viral formats, and knowing exactly what Gen Z means when they say something is “giving.” (Hint: it’s not always a compliment.) 💁‍♀️

We don’t just postwe interpret the shifting tides of online behaviour and turn them into content that slaps. And we do it without making your brand look like it’s trying too hard. Magic? Nah. Just mad skills and cultural fluency.

5. Everyone thinks they can do our job

Bless ‘em. “Oh, I’ve got Instagram – how hard can it be?” Well, Susan, owning a pan doesn’t make you Gordon Ramsay. 😂

Social media management isn’t just posting pictures of your coffee or lunch and hoping for likes. It’s storytelling, community building, customer service, data analysis, trend forecasting, and creative strategy – all at once

We’re not “just doing the socials” – we’re running full-blown marketing campaigns with the precision of a ninja and the patience of a saint.

Next time someone says, “Can you just post something real quick?” feel free to scream into the void. Or just send them this blog.

So, what have we learned?

Social media managers are part creator, part analyst, part digital firefighter. We spin plates, chase trends, battle algorithms, and somehow still find time to be funny online. And if we’re doing it right – you barely even notice the chaos. 🤠

If your brand’s socials feel more dead than your houseplants, maybe it’s time to bring in the pros. We don’t just make content – we make noise. And we bloody love it.

Say ‘howdy’ and we’ll sort your socials before the algorithm buries you alive.
