Friday Digital Roundup

The Friday Digital Roundup is a witty take on the weird world of the internet. With fun stories from around the globe, it’s the only email newsletter you’ll actually read and enjoy!

We do love writing it, but clearly not as much as people like receiving it - just look at the response we got when a technical hitch meant it wasn’t sent out on time!

Coffee and the FDR is how I start my Friday.
Do not engage until I have devoured both

Meschi Consultants @MeschiConsult

When it comes to the end of the week, there is no better way to start a Friday than with a run around the internet with Todd and Jo in the FDR. Just don't let them know I do it from the loo!

Social Media: It’s About More Than Numbers

Tue 23rd May 2023

Kim Kardashian has 376 million. Elon Musk has 754,000.

How many followers have you got?

Does it even matter?

Well, no. I’m here to tell you it doesn’t matter as much as you think.

You might be aiming for the sky with your follower numbers – although it may look important on your monthly report KPIs (sigh), I’m here to tell you that it isn’t everything.

Are you getting people engaging? Are people actually interacting with your social media content? Or are they just another number?

Buckle up, because I’m going to let you in on a few things you should be focusing on more than your follower count.

Social Media: It’s About More Than Numbers

You might be under the impression that the number of followers is the be-all and end-all.

Well, I’m here to break it to you gently – it’s not as straightforward as that. And here’s why…

Interaction

Right, let’s kick off with engagement. Social media isn’t a numbers game; it’s all about connection and interaction. You see, you can have a multitude of followers, but if they’re just scrolling past your scheduled posts without a second glance, you’re not really getting anywhere. It’s a bit like a good ol’ barn dance – if the dancefloor’s chock-a-block but no one’s moving, you’ve got a bit of a problem, haven’t you? Engaging content that sparks conversation, shares, likes, and comments is what you’re really after.

And remember: quality over quantity. Better to have a handful of followers that are genuinely interested in what you have to say than a hoard of them just scrolling past.

Retention

Next up, we’re talking about retention. Having folks follow your page is one thing, but are they sticking around? You need your followers to be loyal, and to keep coming back for more. Think of it like the gold rush – people will flock if they think there’s something worthwhile, but they won’t hang about if the well runs dry. So, you’ve got to keep the wellspring of engaging, authentic, relevant content flowing. Keep giving them reasons to stick around, and to keep engaging with your posts.

Conversion

Now, here’s where things get interesting. Conversion. You’ve got a whole heap of followers, but are they buying what you’re selling? And I’m not just talking about products here. Maybe you’re selling an idea, a lifestyle, a mindset. Whatever it is, are your followers buying into it? It’s one thing to have a bustling saloon, but if they’re just enjoying the piano tunes and not buying any sarsaparilla, you’re not going to keep the doors open for long! So, think about how you can turn your followers into customers, or supporters, or advocates.

Advocacy

Speaking of advocates, that’s our next stop on this journey. How many of your followers are ready to spread the word about you, your brand, and your message? Word of mouth is as powerful now as it was in the days of the Pony Express. You want followers who are willing to share your posts, talk about you in their own posts, and recommend you to their connections.  These are your advocates, your champions, and they’re worth their weight in gold.

Learning

Last, but by no means least, let’s talk about learning. The Wild West of social media is a landscape that’s constantly changing, evolving. You’ve got to be willing to learn, to adapt, or else you might find yourself left in the dust. Every interaction, every comment, and every share is an opportunity for you to learn more about your followers, what they want and what they respond to. And don’t forget to keep an eye on what’s happening in the wider world of social media, too. There’s always a new trend, a new feature, a new way of doing things to explore.

So, there you have it. It’s not just about tallying up followers. It’s about fostering genuine interaction, keeping your audience engaged and loyal, converting followers into customers or advocates, encouraging advocacy, and constantly learning and adapting.

It’s a big old world out there, so saddle up and start making some real connections.
